In 2008, my work visa in the UK was denied. The Tories took over and it was no longer easy to appeal. I was lucky - Claudio Silvestrin sent me to Milan to work.
Andy and I met and instantly became friends at a football pub in Milan, both of us big Manchester United fans, both of us foreigners living in Italy. When I showed him my photos after a solo trip to Florence, he said, "they remind me of Saul Leiter". That was how I was introduced to Saul, and I got to love Saul Leiter's photography.
When I arrived in New York in 2012, I felt as though I was stepping into the fleeting moments captured by Saul Leiter. The vibrant hues of the City and East Village, the long shadows cast on the streets, and the delicate dew clinging to glass in the winter—all seemed to come alive in the way he had once seen the city.
"I enjoy catching the moments. Of course, I don't know that I'm going to get what I'm going to get" - Saul Leiter
In 2023, while I was in Tokyo, I stumbled upon a poster of Saul Leiter, and with it came the surprising discovery of an exhibition opening just as I was about to leave. With only four hours before my flight, I rushed to see it—and every moment was worth it. I’m deeply grateful to have experienced it.
